Windows File Explorer is finally getting that much awaited Dark Theme. In this guide, we will tell you how you can enable the system-wide dark theme for Windows 10.

Seems like this is the season of dark mode or as some people like to call it, dark themes. Personally, I myself do not prefer using Dark Mode/Dark Themes. I still remember how happy I was when Google announced Material Design when Android Lollipop launched. Finally a sweet release from Android ICS Dark theme!

But I get it. Not all of us are wired the same and there are many people out there who absolutely adore Dark Themes. And that is exactly the reason why we see a lot of famous apps such as Twitter, YouTube, and recently even the macOS, offer a Dark Mode.

A couple of months ago, we started hearing news about a possible Dark Theme support for Windows 10 File Explorer. Now, with Preview Build 17666 for the next feature update Redstone 5, the dark theme is now live for Insiders.

The whole UI of the Windows File Explorer is turned dark and it will be quite a treat for the Dark Mode lovers! Common File Dialogs, Context Menu, Background, Open/Save Dialogs – everything is dark!

Please note that there is no exclusive option to enable the Dark Mode for Windows File Explorer. At the time of writing this, if you’re running Insider build 17666, all you have to do is turn on Windows 10’s dark theme and it will enable it across all the apps and system UI that support it, including File Explorer.

Please note that this feature is still in its early stages and some minor hiccups here and there should not surprise you. Hopefully, we would see a more mature version of Windows 10 Dark Theme in the upcoming releases!
