Samsung Sued For Misleading Ads

The #1 smartphone manufacturer is yet again surrounded by controversies. This time it is for misleading advertisement campaigns. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is alleging that the smartphone maker has misled consumers about the water resistance of its devices.

Samsung has been calling its flagships IP68 certifies since the launch of Galaxy S7 around 3 years ago. IP68 indicates that the device can withstand being submerged in water up to 5 feet for a maximum duration of 30 minutes. The Australian authority has alleged that the Korean manufacturer has been over exaggerating this to an entirely new level by a series of advertisements in which Samsung showed its Galaxy phones being used underwater in swimming pools and the sea. In this regards, the ACCC chairman Rod Sims stated:

The ACCC alleges Samsung’s advertisements falsely and misleadingly represented Galaxy phones would be suitable for use in, or for exposure to, all types of water … when this was not the case. Samsung showed the Galaxy phones used in situations they shouldn’t be to attract customers. Samsung’s advertisements, we believe, denied consumers an informed choice and gave Samsung an unfair competitive advantage.

Devices that have come under the radar include are the S10e, S10, S10 Plus, S9, S9 Plus, S8, S8 Plus, S7, S7 Edge, Note 9, Note 8, Note 7, A8, A7, and A5. If proven guilty in the Australian Court, it can attract a fine of up to AUD 10 million. Samsung has not made any official statements yet.
