Redmi K20 vs Realme X: Which One to Buy?

Specification Wars! Ever heard of that term? If you are from India, you must be very well acquainted with the term. For those few who have no idea of what I am speaking of, it is basically mobile phone manufacturers coming up with phones with an aim to provide better value for money for the end consumers. Redmi, Realme, Asus everyone has been throwing whatever they can to make the best performing smartphones in the budget segment. We have seen 48 MP sensors from Redmi and Realme, the same 16 MP sensor which OnePlus used in the OnePlus 6T to be used by Realme, in-display fingerprint sensors, pop up selfie cameras and whatnot.

In the last one month, the scenario got really heated up with Realme and Redmi launching phones which they dubb as the best midrange phone, flagship killer and all those fancy kinds of stuff. What am I speaking of is the Realme X and the Redmi K20! In this article, I will pick my favorite phone out of the two. So without any further ado, let’s get the battle started.

Realme X vs Redmi K20

We have come to the point where we rarely see ugly phones. Even the cheapest of phones look way more premium than their price. The Redmi K20 and the Realme K20 both feature segment-leading craftsmanship. Both of them look identical from the front with no forehead of any form and a tiny chin at the bottom. It’s from the back where both the manufacturers have opted for different design ideologies. Redmi has gone with a flashy, glossy design theme which looks gorgeous while Realme has opted for a minimalistic design theme with no extravaganzas. If you look at it, Redmi K20 has a slight edge over the Realme X in terms of design, with a much more innovative design.

Our Pick: Redmi K20

The Redmi K20 features a 6.39-inch Full HD+ AMOLED panel with a pixel density of 403 PPI while the Realme X has a larger 6.53-inch FHD+ AMOLED panel with a pixel density of 395 PPI. Both the displays should offer a good viewing experience as none of them feature any intrusive elements like notch or hole punch in their displays. Moreover, both the displays are protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

Our Pick: Tie

Here’s where the difference between the two phones appears for the first time. The Redmi X is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 while the Redmi K20 is powered by the newly launched Qualcomm Snapdragon 730. Theoretically speaking, the SD730 should offer better raw performance than that of the SD710 especially since the SD730 is based on an 8 nm LPP whereas the latter is based on a 10 nm LPP. According to Qualcomm, the SD 730 should offer around 30% more performance than its predecessor i.e. the SD710. But as far as I am concerned this is not something earth-shattering. In most of the day to day tasks, you would not be able to notice any noticeable difference in the performance of both the phones.

If you are a multi-tasker, the Redmi K20 should cater your needs better than the Realme X since it features 6GB of RAM while the Realme offers 4 GB.

Our Pick: Redmi K20

Both the phones manufacturers have opted for a heavily skinned version of Android on their respective devices. The Redmi K20 runs on MIUI 10 based on Android 9 Pie while the Realme X runs on Color OS 6 based on Android 9 Pie. Both the skins packs in a lot of features which are missing from stock Android. On the software side of things, it finally boils down to your personal preference. If I had to choose between the two, I would have perhaps gone for MIUI over Color OS. Saying so, I do not mean that Color OS is not as good as MIUI or something. It’s just personal preference as I have earlier said.

Our Pick: Tie

Both the cameras feature the same primary sensor on the rear- the 48 MP Sony IMX 586. We have seen this sensor on a lot of phones this year. From the expensive OnePlus 7 series and Asus Zenfone 6 to the cheaper Redmi Note 7 Pro. So one can expect good camera performance from both the phones as the sensor is pretty capable of taking good shots and add to that the fact that MIUI and Color OS both have very decent image processing. Apart from the primary sensor, the Redmi K20 packs in an 8 MP telephoto lens and a 13 MP ultra-wide lens. Realme X has a different approach to the multi-camera system. It has a 5 MP depth sensor to aid the primary 48 MP in portrait shots or other situations where depth data may be required.

On the front, both the phone makers have gone for a motorized pop-up mechanism. The pop-up module in the Realme X sports a 16 MP sensor while the Redmi K20 sports a 20 MP sensor.

Both the phones pack in very capable camera setup. If you want versatility, the Redmi K20 is your obvious choice since it features lenses of different focal lengths which the Realme X lacks. Other than that, there should not be any difference between the two.

Our Pick: Redmi K20

Battery Life

The Redmi K20 sports a larger battery at 4000 mAh while the Realme X has a slightly smaller 3765 mAh battery. The Realme X bounces back by offering slightly faster VOOC 3.0 fast charger while the Redmi K20 offers more conventional 18 W fast charging. All these should not make much of a difference. Does not matter which one you choose, you will get very decent battery performance.

Our Pick: Tie

Value Add

The Realme X supports Dolby Atmos audio which the Redmi K20 lacks. Similarly, the Redmi K20 has NFC support which the Realme X lacks.

Our Pick: Tie

Final Words: Which One To Buy?

Time to make a decision.

Tight on budget? Realme X is the one to opt; you will absolutely NOT regret your decision.

If money is not a factor, you won’t find a better phone than the Redmi K20 at the moment.

That said, both the Realme X and Redmi K20 punch way above their weight and offer a lot of bang for your money. Gone are the days when you have to pay a premium price for good smartphone experience. Redmi K20 and Realme X are two perfect examples of midrange flagship devices; they are some of the best devices money can buy at the moment. No matter which device you choose, you definitely will not go wrong with your decision.
