After Google Stopped its business with Huawei, the whole tech fraternity was waiting for a response from the Chinese Smartphone manufacturer on this issue. Huawei has said that the company will continue to provide security updates to all smartphones and tablets for its users.  A Huawei spokesperson added saying;

We have made substantial contributions to the development and growth of Android around the world. Huawei will continue to provide security updates and after sales services to all the existing Huawi and Honor smartphone and tablet products, covering those that have been sold and that are still in stock globally.

We will continue to build a safe ans sustainable software ecosystem, in order to provide the best experience for all users globally.

In a tweet from the official twitter handle of Google @Android, the company stated that;

Moreover, Google has confirmed that for the existing Huawei devices, users would continue to be able to update the apps via the Google Play Store. But, the ban would mean that Huawei and Honor cannot send out newer updates to their smartphones globally. If in any case Huawei and Honor do send out updates, then they will be forced to remove the Google Play Services and the Google Play Store from the existing devices too.

All in this situation is bad for Huawei. The only way out of this scenario would be to develop their own operating system that they have been reportedly working on. This was revealed in a post on the South China Morning Post article which you can read in more detail. However, this won’t be a smooth shift as users are well versed with Android. Huawei can make this OS to resemble Android and allow the user to download and install apps like they used to do on Android.

As we don’t have any preview yet, this is a very distant picture which is still not clear. For now, this is probably the end of another smartphone giant.

  1. They can make their app store and OS, but still can’t deal with American companies. That means that the app store wouldn’t have Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Uber, eBay, anything from Adobe, Microsoft, American games, Whatsapp, etc, etc. Doesn’t sound good.

    • While it is true that the American companies cannot do business with Huawei, it does not mean that the users cannot sideload the apps by downloading the APK files. There are already news doing the rounds where Huawei is looking to partner with Aptoide, one of the replacements for Google Play Store where you can find all the apps.
