Guide to Edit Build.prop File on Android Without Root

A detailed step by step guide on how to edit the build.prop file on your Android device without having to root your device. That’s right, no root required! One of the best things about Android devices it is fully customizable. The user can change many things according to their needs. Today we are going to see how to edit build.prop file (it is a system file that contains build properties and settings) some of the contents are specific to your device or your device’s manufacturer, others vary by version of the operating system, but some are generic to all devices running the same version of Android as you are. The editing of build.prop is necessary for customization purposes of your Stock/Custom ROMs as well. You can edit build.prop and get some customization that can be done. So let’s get going.

  2. Download Notepad++.

Steps to Edit Build.prop Without Root Access

Step 1: Switch off your device and go into the recovery mode. Tap on “Mount”. A list of all the partitions on your device will open up. Now checkbox next to “System” and the checkbox next to “Mount system partition read-only” must be unchecked.

Step 2: Now Connect your device to your PC and open the ADB window by

Holding Shift + Right click > Select Open Command Window here.

Step 3: Transfer the build.prop file to your system by typing the command given down in the command prompt.

adb pull /system/build.prop (path to move the file)

Step 4: Once the file is moved edit it easily using the Notepad++ app. Just right-click on the file and click on “edit with Notepad++” option.


Step 5: New Notepad++ window will open and can be able to modify in the build.prop file. Once you’re done with your edits, simply save the changes.


Step 6: Now we need to transfer it back to the device to apply the changes. Type the command given down to do so.

adb push C:ThemeFoxxbuild.prop(path from which the file is to be moved) /system/build.prop(path to which you want to move)

Step 7: You need to set its permissions of the transferred modified build.prop file. To do so, open up the ADB shell by typing in the following command

adb shell

Step 8: When you are in adb shell mode type the following command to set permission

chmod 644 /system/build.prop

Congratulations! You have successfully edited the build.prop file without root access.

  1. Now we have 2019 and the procedure is not that easy as written here with new phones!
    With a new phone like Samsung S9 or S9+ or note9 (and , and, and) this method is not possible!
    Because there is no way to write in system folder and no way to change the system folder from read-only to write.

    If you install TWRP. In TWRP you can easily set the system partition to write and edit the build.prop file.
    But installing TWRP is NOT anymore so easy.
    All that was easy with older phones. A beginner should NOT start this work because it is not easy anymore.

  2. i just try a little with my old Samsung s5 mini.
    You dont get root permissions on ADB without a rooted Phone(StockROM).
