Asus Zenfone 6 (Asus 6Z): ‘Flagship Killer’ Killer?

Asus just announced its flagship for 2019 the Zenfone 6 in India under the name Asus 6z due to some legal issues regarding the use of the “Zenfone” trademark. The Asus 6z is identical to its global variant in all respects. Hence, Asus 6z and Zenfone 6 relate to the same device. Last year’s Zenfone 5z was fairly successful for Asus in the premium mid-range segment of phones in India. Asus is trying to grab some more market share in this segment by making its product compete directly with the OnePlus 7. Let us check if Asus can stand a chance against the tested rival OnePlus’s offerings.

Asus Zenfone 6 | Is this what we have been waiting for?

Asus is trying to build on its momentum created by the Zenfone 5z with its near bezel-less front, an industry leading battery capacity on a flagship and a flip camera mechanism where the rear camera doubles as the front camera.

One can definitely expect top-notch performance from Asus 6z with its flagship internals. The Snapdragon 855 has already been seen in offerings from Samsung and OnePlus and there is no doubt on its capabilities. I feel 6 GB of RAM will definitely get the job done for most which the base variant offers. While UFS 2.1 storage found in the Asus 6z is no slouch, it would have been great if Asus packed in the UFS 3.0 technology with its flagship.

Coming to the camera department, the primary sensor is the same 48 MP Sony IMX 586 sensor which has been seen in almost all flagship phones this year viz. Honor View 20, Oppo Reno and OnePlus 7/7 Pro. Assisting the 48 MP sensor is a 13 MP sensor with an ultra wide-angle lens with a 125 degrees field of view. The camera app packs in quite a lot of modes which can be really handy at specific scenarios. Night mode, HDR+ enhanced and motorized panorama being my favorites. The best thing about the Asus 6z is that all the rear camera goodness is available for selfie situations as well due to the motorized flip camera mechanism where the rear shooter acts like the selfie cameras. This means you can capture 48 MP rich detailed selfies and shoot videos at 4K 60 FPS with EIS enabled. This can prove very handy for the vloggers.

Asus has always been on the receiving end of the critics whenever there is a debate on ZenUI. But gone are those days when ZenUI used to cartoony, bloated and uninspiring. Asus has followed OnePlus’s path of building a user interface which is stock android but on steroids. The Asus 6z runs on ZenUI 6 which is basically stock android with added features like dark mode, screen recording and some other nifty features which are not present in stock android. ZenUI 6 is one of the leading contenders for best android UIs available in 2019.

In the end, let us talk about the display. It is the least inspiring part of a product which is so good to be called perfect. Asus uses an IPS LCD panel which will instantly turn down many potential buyers. Well yes, it is understandable that OLED technology is superior but it is Asus’s approach to keep the costs in check. Saying so, it is not just any other IPS LCD screen out. It covers 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, has a peak brightness of 600 nits and supports HDR10 content. Add to that the display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6. All these makeup for a really good panel.

Final Words

The Asus 6Z is a really interesting device with great hardware bundled in a well-designed body and I think Asus has even got the pricing right. Starting at 31,999 INR, the Asus 6z can be a worthy competitor to OnePlus 7. Saying so, I do not say that it is a phone with no flaws especially with the flip camera module. Though Asus says that it has been tested over 1,00,000 times, its real-world durability is still skeptical. Add to the fact that due to the moving part there is no protection from water or similar.

  1. Speaking of Sony Xperia 1, I am of the opinion that 21:9 aspect ratio makes a phones too tall for single hand use. Moreover, I dont find much content available in that aspect ratio especially when I take Youtube to account. Even popular games are not optimised for such tall aspect ratio. 4K display panel in a phone sounds like an overkill to me and add to that the fact that the battery capacity is limited to 3300 mAh which does not sound logical in my opinion. I do not find much people these days who are excited for Sony phones.
