How to Add Links to Instagram Posts and Instagram Stories

Just like the real world, there are a lot of different categories of people and entities in social media as well. You might have noticed that in some Instagram stories of popular websites and celebrities, there are links included right in the stories. How often have you come across an Instagram story with the words ‘Swipe up for full details’ and stuff like that? I bet, very often – especially if you are following famous brands and people. And then you also come across Instagram posts with a link right under the pictures. And when you click these links, you will be taken to a web page.

But when you look around your Instagram settings to figure out how to do this yourself, you will be disappointed.

Instagram is one of the fastest-growing social media platforms out there. Companies are spending millions and millions of dollars in advertising on the platform. With the rise of the digital era, marketing has become a very important business strategy for many corporations.

If you have been looking for a way to add links to Instagram Stories and/or Instagram posts, here are your best options.

Add Link to Instagram Stories

When you visit your Instagram story page, no matter which mode you choose, you will not find an option to add or insert a link into the Instagram story. And if you type in the link directly in the story, it will just show up as text rather than a clickable link.

The reason is that only popular Instagram accounts and brands have the option to add links to Instagram stories. You will have to be a ‘verified’ Instagrammer to be able to add links to your Instagram stories. If you think you are eligible to get verified, you can request verification by following the below process:

  1. Open the Instagram app.
  2. Go to your profile.
  3. Open the profile settings.
  4. Tap on ‘Account‘.
  5. And then tap on ‘Request Verification‘.

You will be asked to provide a few details here as a part of the process. Please note that applying for verification does not guarantee that it will be granted to you. All we can do now is to hope that Instagram will be added in the near future.

Add Link to Instagram Posts

Fortunately, unlike Instagram stories, anyone can add a link to Instagram posts. And you guessed it right – there is indeed a catch to it.

The only way to add a link to an Instagram post is when the post is used as an advertisement. That’s right. Sure, you can type in the URL you want to share in the caption of your picture but it will not be clickable. And the problem is, links are not exactly very easy to remember and type-in manually.

Why does Instagram have this limitation? Money – Duh! You have to be willing to pay to Instagram if you want to insert links to Instagram posts. If you really need to boost traffic to a specific page or a product on your website, then Instagram ads are the best way to do it. You can start with as little as $1.

To be able to advertise on Instagram, you first need to convert your personal account into a business/professional account. Don’t panic. All this does is that it add some extra features and options to your existing profile, such as analytics (to see how well your posts are performing) and the ability to boost a post(ads). You can easily do this by going to Instagram > Profile > Settings > Account > Switch to Professional Account

Sadly, this is the only way Instagram would let anyone add a link to an Instagram post – celebrity or otherwise. And we don’t see this changing anytime soon. So, if you absolutely must share links in your Instagram posts, then there is no better way to do it than the Instagram advertising platform.

Other Workarounds

Instagram lets anyone add links in their bio. There are absolutely no restrictions on this; anyone with an Instagram account can easily add any link in their profile page.

The simplest way to take advantage of this feature is to constantly keep updating the link in the bio. For example, you can share a picture and in the caption, you can mention ‘link in bio’. And then update the bio with the link you want the user to visit. Yes, it is not very effective but it works. I have used it personally and while it did get many clicks, it still did get some.

Need to track performance?

If you want to be able to track the performance of the link you are sharing (for example, how many clicks it is getting), it is a good idea to use a link shortening service such as bitly, which provides free analytics. And hey, it keeps the links short!

And then there is another way too. It may not be what you are looking for but there are tools out there that take advantage of this Instagram bio link and provide a slightly better user experience. To put it shortly, you can signup for services like linktree. Linktree enables you to create a page with multiple links which you can add in your bio. This helps the user to add more than one link. You can link to your twitter, webpage, and many others – all from a single link. Here’s how it looks:

Of course, linktree is not the only service like this – there are several others! Yes, this may not be the optimal solution but something is really better than nothing. And the best thing about this is, you can always edit and update the linktree page with new and fresh links.

Unless Instagram changes its mind and decides to open linking in stories and posts to everyone, we have to make to with these workarounds. Did we miss any trick or do you know of any better way to add links on Instagram? We’re all ears. Let us know in the comments!
